Social ecological model
Heartlines uses the social ecological model to inform its work.
The social ecological model (SEM) is a powerful framework used to understand and influence social and behavioural change by examining the dynamic interplay between individuals and their environments. It emphasises that human behaviour is shaped by multiple layers of influence, ranging from personal factors to broader societal structures.
The SEM is typically represented in five interconnected levels:
- Individual level - focuses on personal attributes such as knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviours
- Interpersonal level - highlights the role of relationships with family, friends, and peers in shaping behaviour
- Institutional level - considers the influence of institutions like schools, workplaces, and faith-based organisations
- Community level - examines the social networks, cultural norms, and resources within communities
- Policy level - addresses the impact of laws, policies, and broader societal systems
The articles and resources here are organised for users to explore content relevant to these SEM levels. Whether you are designing interventions at the individual level or influencing policy, you’ll find targeted insights and evidence-based strategies to support sustainable change across society.
