Engaging fathers(to-be): a pilot study on the adaptation and programme experience of SMS4baba intervention in Kenya’s informal settlements

The pilot study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of the SMS4baba intervention, adapted from Australia's SMS4dads programme, to support expectant fathers in Nairobi's informal settlements. Seventy-two fathers received thrice-weekly text messages from late pregnancy to over six months postpartum, providing educational content aimed at enhancing paternal involvement and parenting practices. Participants reported that the messages were educational, reinforced positive parenting, and assisted in coping with the transition to fatherhood. Quantitative assessments indicated increased father involvement in childcare, improved infant/child attachment, and enhanced partner support. The study concluded that digital interventions like SMS4baba are effective in engaging fathers in low-resource settings, promoting positive behaviour changes that challenge traditional gendered parenting norms.
