Activity 1: All that we share (20 min)
Step 1: Divide into categories
Divide the learners into categories. Depending on the group, these might be
different. But, for instance, you can divide them by religion, gender, race, language.
Each learner then stands in a box that has been demarcated using masking tape.
For example, if you used gender as a category, then all girls will stand in the box
labelled ‘GIRLS’.
Step 2:
The facilitator asks the following questions, and the learners are asked to step out of the box into the centre of the room if the questions apply to them. They move back and forth depending on which question applies to them.
Who in this room is the class clown?
Who forgot to do their homework this week?
Who loves to dance?
Who loves to sing?
Who has a step-parent?
Who has a pet?
Who has been bullied?
Who has bullied others?
Who feels broken-hearted?
Who is madly in love?
Who sometimes feels lonely?
Who sometimes feels ignored?
Who is looking forward to the school holidays?
Step 3: Discuss
What most surprised you about this activity?
How did it feel being putting into a box or category?
What did you learn from this exercise about yourself and about others?
Encourage learners to reflect on stereotypes/pre-judging others based on race, culture, religion, or language.
