Activity 2: Save the last word for me (50 min)
Step 1:
Watch or read the transcript of ‘The Cooking Pots: Ayanda Remembers Her Grandmother’.
Step 2:
Ask learners to write down three quotes, comments, or words that characters said that stood out for them in the story.
Step 3:
The learners draw three columns with the headings below, in three rows – one for each quote. Draw the template below on the board. Learners must have a row for each quote, and write one sentence under each column heading in their journals.
Highlighted quote | Why I chose this quote | What this quote reminds me of |
---|---|---|
What interested me about this quote (content, image, how it was delivered) | Was it something that happened in your own life in the past or recently? Or in a film or book? | |

Step 4:
Divide learners into groups of three, labelling them student A, B and C.
Step 5:
Invite learner A to read one of their chosen quotations.
Step 4:
Students B and C then discuss the quotation, while student A remains silent.
What do they think the quotation means?
Why do they think these words are important to both themselves and the community?
Step 5:
After several minutes, ask student A to read what they wrote in the other two columns, thus having ‘the last word’.
Step 6:
This process then continues, with student B sharing, and then student C.
