Discussion Starter: Why do women matter in a conversation on fatherhood?

This position paper forms part of the upcoming symposium to discuss the Fathers Matter: Amplifying children’s voices about fatherhood report by Heartlines. This report represents a critical shift in how the issue of fatherhood is approached and the intervention strategies. South African children have been given the space to define what makes a good or bad father, and to articulate their experiences of the absence or presence of fathers. Their voices are essential in shaping the pathways to transformation.

Heartlines in partnership with the Wits School of Governance, is hosting a symposium to create a multi-sectoral space for dialogue, reflection,and action on the implications of the Fathers Matter children's research. 

This discussion starter explores women's different views about fatherhood. It uses the Fathers Matter film Family Portrait and some questions to help your small group, team or friends explore this important topic together. 

We know that it's not always easy to get fathers involved. There are so many reasons for this. That said, we hope that these tips equip you to take a step in building a good partnership with those fathers who do want to be involved.
