Alcohol and other substances can become a way to escape the pressure, manage stress or avoid difficult emotions that come with fatherhood. But what begins as a way to unwind can sometimes become a pattern that affects a dad’s mental health, relationships and the ability to show up for their children.

Being a dad doesn’t mean giving up your social life. You can still go out, have fun, enjoy a few drinks and make time for yourself. Counselling psychologist and Heartlines representative Marlon Botha joins Area Code host Pretty Ngwenya to unpack how alcohol consumption can affect fatherhood, relationships and family life, and how dads can find a healthy balance between enjoying themselves and being present for their children.

South Africa is reeling again from the latest scourge of violence against women. And while there are many questions to ask: what are the police doing, why isn’t the government doing more, why aren’t women safe to walk freely? One question Heartlines is asking: where are the fathers when women are being killed, and what is the role of fathers in stopping GBV in our country?

Power of Women and Children Liaison Officer, Tom Fikiri shares his experience attending the Fathers Matter Champion National Training that took place at The Bridge Church of the Nazarene in Johannesburg South. 

Pastor and author Themba Dlamini says that violence isn't just an event, it develops over time. In a society battling high levels of violence, particularly gender-based violence, he argues that many boys grow up without healthy examples of masculinity and are often shaped by environments that reward dominance while discouraging vulnerability.
